Environmental initiatives in Vaudreuil-Dorion for Earth Day
To mark Earth Day, the Ville de Vaudreuil-Dorion is holding a number of environmental activities on its territory. This evening, a lecture on Quebec’s endangered species will be presented at the Maison Félix-Leclerc. Two initiatives aimed at promoting biodiversity will also be back this year: a bioblitz will be held on April 26 at parc-nature Harwood, inviting citizens to take a census of local flora and fauna, while owners of single-family homes will be able to sign up for the biodiversity islands project, which encourages the creation of natural spaces favourable to pollinating insects.
Les Écodécouvertes
This Tuesday, April 22 at 7 p.m., the Maison Félix-Leclerc will welcome a biologist from the Zoo Ecomuseum for a captivating conference on nature protection and conservation. Participants will have the opportunity to discover several inspiring projects carried out by the Zoo Ecomuseum’s Research and Conservation team, while learning about concrete actions they can take to contribute to the preservation of Quebec’s flora and fauna. To attend this conference, simply register online or by phone at 450 455-3371.
Bioblitz at parc-nature Harwood
From April 25 to 28, 2025, the Greater Montreal region (GMC) will be taking part in a global bioblitz called the “Urban Nature Challenge”. Over the course of four days, citizens from over 400 cities around the world will attempt to document as many species of wildlife as possible using the free iNaturalist application.
The Ville de Vaudreuil-Dorion is once again joining the movement by organizing a second bioblitz at parc-nature Harwood, on April 26, starting at 9 a.m. Last year’s event identified 59 plant varieties and 23 animal species.
During guided hikes (departures at 9:15 a.m. and 11 a.m.), participants will benefit from the expertise of Éco-Pivot and Pierre Molina, President of Environnement Faucon, in identifying the species observed. Information booths on insects and exotic plant species will also be on hand during the event. Before taking part in the bioblitz, we recommend that you download the iNaturalist mobile application onto your phone. No knowledge or experience is required to take part in this free activity, which does not require registration.
Biodiversity islands
The City is continuing its efforts to encourage biodiversity and protect the habitat of the monarch butterfly and pollinating insects by once again proposing the Biodiversity islands project. This project will enable owners of single-family residences to allow vegetation to grow on a section of their property in excess of 30 cm. This practice will encourage the establishment of native flowers and grasses, ideal for pollinating insects. Citizens wishing to set up a biodiversity island on their property have until April 30 to register. Criteria and maintenance standards apply.
Full details of these initiatives are available on the City’s website. For further information, residents are invited to contact the Environment Division at environnement@ville.vaudreuil-dorion.qc.ca or 450 455-3371.
