The Horticultural Fair returns May 9-11 in Vaudreuil-Dorion

The Ville de Vaudreuil-Dorion is pleased to announce the return of its annual Horticultural Fair, to be held from May 9 to 11 in the parking lot of the municipal arena (9, rue Jeannotte). Reservations for plants and time slots for compost and wood chip collection will be taken from April 28, 9 a.m. to May 6, 4:30 p.m. This spring event, part of the rendez-vous intergénérationnels, aims to promote gardening activities and contribute to the greening and beautification of the city.

Compost and wood shavings distribution

Compost and wood shavings are available free of charge at the following locations:

Municipal Arena (9, rue Jeannotte):

  • Friday, May 9: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Saturday, May 10: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Sunday, May 11: no appointment necessary while supplies last


Parc-nature Harwood (3900, route Harwood:

  • Saturday, May 10: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Sunday, May 11: no appointment necessary while supplies last

Interested parties must reserve a 30-minute time slot online, starting April 28, 9 a.m. A valid citizen card is required to register. When collecting compost or wood chips, citizens must bring containers or trailers, shovels and gloves. No equipment will be loaned on site.

Purchase of shrubs

Five types of shrubs will be offered at a modest cost of $10 each. Residents will have the option of reserving one or two shrubs of different species from 9 a.m. on April 28. Residents will be able to pick up their plants on May 9, between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., or on May 10, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., at the municipal arena. Shrubs not sold on the online platform will be available for purchase directly on site on the same dates. Payment by cash (exact amount), debit card or credit card will be accepted.

The shrubs, in limited quantities, are as follows:

  • Patriot Blueberry (Vaccinium “Patriot”);
  • Buddleia “Pugster Blue” (Buddleia pugster blue);
  • Golden Hop (Humulus lupulus);
  • St. John's Wort (Hypericum kalmianum);
  • Shore Vine (Vitis riparia).

Kiosks

On Saturday, May 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., several kiosks will be set up on the arena site. The City's Environment Division will be promoting the biodiversity island pilot project. Citizens will be able to purchase free melliferous plants, grass and milkweed seeds, and compostable bags. Volunteers from l'Effet papillon will provide information on monarch butterflies. Library staff will be on hand with their Jardinothèque and Bouturothèque concepts to exchange cuttings and seeds. To learn more about horticulture and the importance of the urban canopy, employees of the Division entretien des espaces verts et des aires récréatives will be on hand to answer visitors' questions, as well as handing out trees, courtesy of the Ministère des Forêts, de la Faune et des Parcs (MFFP). Other organizations such as the 19th Vaudreuil-Dorion Scout Group, COMQUAT, Comité ZIP du Haut-Saint-Laurent, Mères au front and Mouvement d'action régionale en environnement (MARE) will be on hand to raise public awareness of environmental issues.

Children's program

New this year: young children are invited to accompany their parents to the Horticultural Fair, as activities have been specially designed for them. The Centre prénatal et jeunes familles de Vaudreuil-Soulanges will be offering a story hour (11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.), as well as a craft workshop. L'Atelier Paysan will be offering a workshop on planting a miniature potted garden. Children can also have their faces painted for free!
