Textile reuse at the heart of this year’s Réparothon

The City of Vaudreuil-Dorion is taking advantage of Waste Reduction Week to hold an event aimed at consuming less, but better. The fifth edition of the Réparothon will be held free of charge on Saturday, October 26th, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., at the Centre multisports André-Chagnon, located at 3093 boulevard de la Gare.

The following partners will be on hand to share their knowledge and help visitors with the repair of a variety of objects:

  • Aiguisage CL (knife sharpening – maximum of three);
  • Centre d'action bénévole L'Actuel (temporary mini thrift shop);
  • Cercle des fermières (simple clothing repairs);
  • Comité 21 (circular economy of textiles);
  • PC-Teck (computer troubleshooting);
  • Scout 19e Vaudreuil-Dorion (repair service for jewelry, broken or unsoldered items);
  • Tricentris (good recycling practices).

New this year: citizens are invited to bring their used clothing to donate or exchange for new finds at the temporary mini thrift shop.

"In Quebec, a large proportion of the clothes purchased end up in landfills. This new edition of the Réparothon will feature several players involved in the reuse and repair of textiles in order to illustrate how the lifespan of clothing can be increased. Why not take this opportunity to repair, redesign or upgrade your old clothes! " says Oriana Farina, Head of the Environment Department.

Participants will also be able to have their damaged books repaired at the Vaudreuil-Dorion library’s booth. The Lab will also be on hand to show visitors how old clothes can be refreshed using digital printing. Simply bring the items of clothing or fabric you wish to enhance, as well as a USB key containing the images you want to use.

Citizens will also be able to dispose of old batteries, corks, pens and pencils at the City of Vaudreuil-Dorion’s booth.

Workshops

In keeping with the goal of learning how to reduce waste at its source, two workshops will take place during the day. The first one will be hosted by Les Affûtés, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and will focus on embroidery and visible repair. To attend, simply sign up by sending an email to environnement@ville.vaudreuil-dorion.qc.ca. The second workshop, which will run on a continuous basis from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., does not require booking in advance, and will be led by a Motio representative who will explain how to make your own household products.

Lecture

As part of the Écodécouvertes lecture series, Mélissa de La Fontaine - consultant and Zero waste lifestyle/Ecological transition advisor for COOP Incita, will hold a conference at the municipal library (51, rue Jeannotte) on Tuesday, October 22nd at 7 p.m. about how objects depreciate over a certain period of time. During this event, participants will have the opportunity to better understand the many aspects of obsolescence while learning about the many ways that are within their reach to be part of the solution!

Those interested in attending this conference can sign up online starting today.
